Wildfire and Wild Roses

wildfire-and-wild-roses

As a little girl I loved ponies and horses and the fantastical unicorns. I don’t know why though if you had asked me at the ripe age of five then I would have probably responded a long the times of, “They’re pretty!” Now that I’m well past five, or so I hope, I am just as enthralled by the creatures. Especially at this particular point in my life.

Netflix recently began streaming the ABC series Wildfire and Hulu brought out the Canadian show Wild Roses. What is the significance? They are both westerns with strong female leads which instantly screams “hurrah” in my good opinion.

Wildfire is a family drama about two ranches that are in the field of competitive horse racing on the west coast of the USA. Raintree Farm and Davis Farms have been rivals for decades and the feud is only getting worse as both ranches are starting to suffer financial losses. Their goal? To win as many as races as possible to get the purse money and if possible, triumph over one another. The series sports a messy romance between the feuding family that goes back and forth and the presence of a female underdog over four seasons.

Not too different is Wild Roses. The show is also based around feuding Canadian family ranches, the McGreggors and the Henrys. The patriarch of the McGreggor family is determined to get the Henry land known as Rivercross, land that had originally been part of the McGreggor family. And as all feuds go, there is the forbidden love between the McGreggor boys and the Henry girls. A story of rich vs the poor, falling for the girls next door and petty violent revenge, the series is topped off with a power hungry McGreggor daughter and a Henry girl just coming of age.

These shows make me want to spend a summer in Montana or something. I daydream about what it might be like to actually live on the ranch. So romantic. But then I remind myself of the crazy hours they keep and appreciate the suburbs that I call home.

  1. I grew up obsessed with horses and unicorns too… I watched movies, TV shows and read books on them. I wish my parents could’ve afforded to put me in riding lessons though. =(
